Bitter pit is caused by a lack of calcium in the fruit and is a well-known problem in apple cultivation. It has been proven that calcium increases the stability of cell walls and the cohesion between neighbouring cells. Calcium deficiency results in a physiological disorder, which manifests itself, for example, in bitter pit. Calcium performs in other important functions in the plant, such as regulating the stomata and promoting the growth of the meristems.
Each element strives for the strongest and most stable connection possible. Compared to potassium, for example, calcium is highly susceptible to forming a bond with other elements. The result is bound or blocked calcium, which can no longer be absorbed by the plant. Calcium can be blocked by sulphates, which are found in the soil, or by bicarbonates, which are often present in water. In addition, too high EC value and too low pH value lead to blockages. As the plant can absorb cations, such as potassium or magnesium, more easily than calcium, the absorption of calcium is more difficult.
How do you make calcium available to plants and less susceptible to blockages?
Our solution is our Colloidal Nanoporter®, biodynamic molecules that are present in all our products. These stabilise the calcium so that it cannot be blocked. Furthermore, calcium uptake into the plant is optimised by our biodynamic molecule because it is coated with a liposome. The liposome consists of phospholipids that ensure easy nutrient uptake into the plant cell. We offer two products for calcium application: ULTRA Ca, which is designed for root uptake, and HYPER CaB, which is engineered for foliar uptake. HYPER CaB also contains boron, which improves the accumulation of calcium in the fruit.
The Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau Bodensee (KOB) is currently conducting a practical trial of our HYPER CaB product and we look forward to reporting on the results once the trial has been completed. We will discuss the results together in our regular Online-Stammtisch.
